Adventure Biography
 Sandy
loves the desert, and has established herself as an ultramarathon
athlete and adventurer in deserts around the world.
Sandy has raced the gruelling Marathon des Sables ultramarathon
4 times. This competition is the toughest stage race in the world.
It takes place in the Sahara Desert in Morocco, Africa. Athletes
race 150 miles over the course of 7 days, the equivalent of 5 marathons
back to back. Runners must carry all of the food and supplies
they will need for the week on their backs. Organizers only provide
rationed water, tents, and medical aid. There are no toilets, showers,
or beds. Sandy plans to compete in this race again in April 2003.
Sandy has been the focus of 2 documentaries, which aired on Eurosport
and Outdoor Life Television. A third documentary will feature her
efforts to complete the Marathon des Sables in 2004. It will air
on the Womens Sport Network.
This experience in the desert is laying the foundation for the most
ambitious project of all, a camel trek across the hostile Sahara
Desert. Sandy is planning to travel from Morocco, on the West coast,
to the Nile in Egypt, and back again. That is a distance of 9,000
miles! It will take her almost 2 years to complete the journey. This
adventure will begin in January 2005.
A former television journalist, Sandy is now a full time athlete
and adventurer. She is also in demand as speaker. In her spare time,
Sandy devotes her time to helping at charity events.
Sandy has lived in 4 coutries, Canada, Germany, Sardinia and Japan.
She has travelled all over the world, but calls Alberta home.
